The South Sudan Media Authority (SSMA), with the support of UNESCO, has launched a journalist's code of conduct ahead of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebrations. The document aimed at enhancing self-regulation and the realization of professional journalists/media workers in the country.

This code of conduct was developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, including journalists, media organizations, civil society groups, and government officials. It sets out many principles and standards that journalists are expected to uphold. these include:

  1. Accuracy and objectivity
  2. Fairness and balance
  3. Independence and impartiality
  4. Respect for privacy and dignity
  5. Professionalism and integrity

The code of conduct is intended to be a voluntary framework for journalists to follow. Nonetheless, the Media Authority takes action against journalists who break the code's rules and considers it when making regulatory decisions.

For South Sudan, the Code of Conduct is a positive step. Journalists have frequently been singled out for their work, and the nation has a long history of media repression. The code of conduct gives journalists a clear set of guidelines to adhere to and support the nation's efforts to advance professionalism, responsibility, and media freedom.
